InstallFest A Huge Success!
We held an InstallFest on March 18, 2006. It was a huge success and we helped several participants with problems ranging from booting failures due to hardware configuration to installing Linux on a new laptop (dual booting with XP Home).
Many thanks to everyone that came to help! You are a fine bunch and your time and efforts were really appreciated. Here are some comments:
Thanks to everyone how helped fix my wireless. I can now connect at home.
Nice turn out … For around an hour or so we were pretty much out of places for people to sit their computer if it was a desktop.
Announcement
(This is all, clearly, dated text - but it was what we actually did.)
We will be having an InstallFest on March 18, 2006. This is our first InstallFest in quite some time!
Bring your computer (CPU only) and we will assist you in installing Linux. We will also help you if you want to create a dual-boot system with Linux and another OS.
Here are some guidelines:
Hardware
We ask that your computer have at least the following specifications:
- Pentium (Pentium II preferred)
- 128 Mb of RAM (in order to run X-Windows -- the Linux GUI
- 4 Gb hard drive
- CD-ROM drive
We will have at least four monitors, keyboards, and mouses available to do the installations during the InstallFest.
Spares?
Do you have equipment that you no longer want/need and you want to donate to the LUG? Please bring it over! We can use RAM modules, hard drives, CD-ROMs, mouses, keyboards, etc.
Hardware Problems?
Although the purpose of the Fest is to help folks with the installation of Linux, please feel free to bring a computer that you may be having "hardware" problems with. We will be glad to look at it assuming there is enough available time and manpower.
Short on Hardware?
If you have an older computer that has almost everything needed but requires a little help, please let us know and we will try to assist. For example, if your CD-ROM is gone we may be able to come up with one for you either free or cheap. Please email us with some details and we will try to help. Please use vgascon2001@yahoo.com and the subject of "InstallFest -- Hardware Problem."
Software
We will have various distros available for installation. Please let us know ahead of time if you want a copy of a specific distro to take with you and we will try to have them ready. The email address to use is vgascon2001@yahoo.com; the subject should be: Distro Request. Please tell us what distro(s) you are interested in getting. Also, as a courtesy, please bring some blank 700 MB blank CDs to cover the cost of producing your copies.
If you are interested in setting up a dual-boot ssytem, please make sure to bring your own copy of any non-Linux OS (Windows, BSD, etc.). Due to legal limitations, we cannot help you install any licensed operating system unless you have a legitimate license. We are not responsible for checking whether you have a licensed copy of an OS -- but any obviouosly pirated copies will not be supported.
Hours
The Fest will start around 9 AM and will run until approximately 4 PM. Past Fests have continued until much later than that! However, some of the equipment (monitors, etc.) may not be available after 4 PM.
Door Prizes
Four computers will be given out during the day. The first system will be given away around 10:30 AM.
