Tom Sighter did a fantastic job of showing the different components that make the Linux desktop, especially X Windows. Tom demonstrated how the process of creating the desktop can be done manually, starting from creating the config file for the X server. He then showed how a person can load different X Windows managers, and finally how the desktop manager interacts with all previous components. Tom also showed the group how we can remotely launch graphics applications on a server that has no graphics enabled. For example, we can have a server that is not running a GUI, connect to it remotely, and run a GUI-based application on the remote machine.
