Jay Salter gave an excellent 2 hour presentation on Linux System Administration 101. It was attended by a diverse group of 20 people from industry, education, and government.
Especially noteworthy was slide 35, dpkg and dselect, which allow you to take a snaphot of all the applications on your system and rebuild all those application on a newer computer with one command.
On old computer: dpkg --get-selections > /etc/dpkg.packagelist.txt
On new computer: dpkg --set-selections < /etc/dpkg.packagelist.txt dselect → press I
Compare that process to upgrading Windows, which can easily take all day and cost thousands of dollars.
Afterward a wake was held for Robert Fraysee at The Whig.
